Dravidian University
The Dravidian University was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through a Legislature Act (No: 17 of 1997) at Kuppam, a tri-lingual Junction in the South-western part of Andhra Pradesh with the initial support extended by the Governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala for an integrated development of Dravidian languages, literatures thus paving way for cultural and emotional integration of all the regions that carry forward the ancient historical torch of the nation.
The University, which formally came into existence in 1997, began functioning with two departments in 1999, has today grown into a strong institution of 21 Academic Departments and 7 Research Centers.
Located in a sylvan scene, pollution-free and aesthetically appealing at Srinivasavanam, the campus, presents a traditional picture of blending tradition and modernity harmoniously.
The University has launched Open and Distance Education in 2007 with the objective of introducing quality Distance Education programmes. We welcome all the prospective learners to make use of the opportunities made available by the Dravidian University to enrich their knowledge and skill in the chosen field for their individual development and for the development of Nation’s human resources.
Functions and Duties
- To provide for instruction in such branches of knowledge, technology, vocations and professions as the University may determine from time to time and to make provision for research;
- To plan and prescribe courses of study for degrees, diplomas, certificates or for any other purposes;
- To hold examinations and confer degrees, diplomas, certificates or other academic distinctions or recognitions;
- To confer honorary degrees or other distinctions in the manner laid down by the Statutes;
- To determine the manner in which distance education may be organized;
- To institute professorships, readerships, lectureships and other academic positions and to appoint persons thereto;
- To co-operate with other universities and institutions of higher learning;
- To institute and award fellowships, scholarships, prizes and other awards;
- To establish and maintain Regional Centers;
- To prepare instructional materials including films, cassettes, tapes and other software;
- To organize refresher courses, workshops, seminars and academic programmes;
- To recognize examinations or periods of study of other universities;
- To promote research and development in educational technology;
- To create administrative, ministerial and other necessary posts;
- To receive benefactions, donations and gifts;
- To borrow money with the approval of the Government;
- To enter into, carry out, vary or cancel contracts;
- To demand and receive fees and other charges;
- To maintain discipline among students and employees;
- To recognize institutions of higher learning;
- To appoint visiting Professors, Emeritus Professors, Consultants and Scholars;
- To determine standards and conditions for admission of students;
- To promote the health and welfare of employees;
- To confer autonomous status on Colleges or Regional Centres;
- To admit Colleges in or outside India subject to approval;
- To do all such acts necessary for achieving the objectives of the University.
